Our team members at The Astrid have tried these exhilarating winter activities in Steamboat Springs and can’t get enough of how many ways you can enjoy the Champagne PowderⓇ snow. 

From Dog Sledding to Snowmobiling to Musical Performances, there is something for everyone in this divine mountainside town. 

 

Snow Buddy Sled Dog Adventures

This is one adventure for all the animal lovers in your family! Embark on a guided tour of the backcountry using a travel method that’s bound to be one for the books. 

Choose to drive your own sled or sit back and enjoy the ride on a sled with a professional driver. You’ll learn how to care for the dogs, hook up the harnesses, and mush down the trail. 

Each tour is guided and includes a halfway stop in the Routt National Forest to warm up, indulge in a hot beverage and homemade snacks, and, of course, allow the hardworking dogs time to rest before returning to the trailhead. 

Location: Snow Buddy is quite remote, but they offer a shuttle service from in town.

Price: Ranges from $300/adult on a half-day excursion to $5350/8 adults on a full-day excursion. 

 

Thunderstruck Adventures

We bet you haven’t experienced a mountain in Steamboat like this before! Thunderstruck Adventures has its own mountain compound where your group can explore the fresh powder without running into other touring parties. 

Sled through the tree-lined slopes on a technical tour, take in stunning backcountry views while gliding across the pristine flat terrain, or advance your skills with daring chutes and drops. 

This private mountain offers a snowmobile experience like no other. They also provide gear, helmets, and lunch for those on the full-day tour. 

Location: Meet at 2740 Lincoln Ave and take a shuttle to the trailhead.

Price: Ranges from $235/adult driver for a 2-hour tour, to $525/adult driver for a full-day tour.

 

Steamboat Flyfisher

This well-respected company has been hosting guided tours on the Yampa River and other local bodies of water for years. They even have agreements to access private ranches in the area, which allows your group to have the water all to yourselves. 

Whether you’re a seasoned fly fisher or want to try out a new pastime, you’ll learn about the ecology and fish species in the area from knowledgeable guides, and they’ll show you excellent techniques for hooking the perfect catch.

Price: Ranges from $350 to $1100, depending on the number of participants and length of excursion. 

 

Bridgestone Winter Driving School

Feel the adrenaline while carving turns of a different kind this winter as you tackle the snowy track in Steamboat Springs. The three specially designed tracks feature elevation changes, banked and off-camber turns, and numerous surface changes. 

Whether you want a safety class to gain technical skills for winter driving or prefer the rush of performance driving – there’s a class for that! Using cars supplied by Toyota, take part in a group or private lesson with professionally trained instructors with extensive backgrounds in all types of racing from Formula 2000 to Performance Rally.

Strings Music Festival

As Steamboat Springs’ premier live music presenter, the Strings Pavilion seats 569 people and hosts performances year-round. 

During the winter months, a free concert series is available at the Steamboat Art Museum. “Intersections: Music at the Museum” is a collaboration that allows guests to admire the museum exhibits and partake in an intimate concert. 

The series consists of 3 performances, one each month from January to March. Each performance includes 30 minutes to browse the gallery, a 45-minute concert, and a 15-minute audience question period and meet-and-greet with the artists.

Saddleback Ranch

Have you ever ventured out into the Champagne SnowⓇ on horseback? 

This exhilarating activity blends the best of what Steamboat is known for: a fantastic winter season and a long ranching history. Take the 2-hour ride over the snow-covered hills and through the majestic forests of Saddleback Ranch, while admiring the view and getting to know your horse. 

For kids and adults alike, the ranch offers a thrilling ride down the slopes of their Snow Tubing hill. Choose from three groomed runs, then hop in your inner tube and speed down to the base. Take a break with a hot drink, then let the mechanical lift pull you back up to do it again!

Steamboat Lake Outpost

The Outpost is a one-stop location for all your winter fun. With a restaurant, cabins, general store, and a full range of winter activities, there’s no shortage of things to do here. 

Take a scenic horse-drawn sleigh ride through snowy meadows while sipping on hot cocoa, embark on a guided snowshoe tour in the backcountry away from the crowds, or cast your line on a guided ice fishing excursion.

The Outpost also provides private tours that can be fully customized to your family’s choice of activities for the day.

Steamboat Powdercats

This is one unique way to experience the famous deep, powdery snow that makes Steamboat Springs one of the best skiing locations in the world. 

Climb aboard a snowcat, head into the trails located in Buffalo Pass, and get ready to have a ski story to rave about for years to come. With a professional guide at the helm, you’ll form strong bonds with other powder addicts as you traverse some of the deepest snow in Colorado. 

Powdercats offers excursions at all skill levels, so you can enjoy your time and learn new skills from your guide without feeling overwhelmed by the terrain. This family-focused company takes the time to learn about each guest before embarking on the tour.

This organization is a leader in environmental education in Northwest Colorado. They provide year-round programs for children and adults, many of which are free of charge. 

Their Winter Programs are all guided by professionals and always have an educational focus. Snowshoe through the pristine tree-lined trails and learn about everything from animal tracking to plant ID. 

One of their most interesting programs is the Moonlight Snowshoe Tour. This breathtaking opportunity allows guests to see the forest under a starry sky and embrace the still that nighttime brings to this area. You’ll also learn about the area’s ecology and search for wildlife tracks in the snow.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs

Soaking in a hot spring under the clear winter sky is one of the most relaxing Steamboat experiences. 

This unique winter activity is for adults only, as children are not permitted after sundown. Open until midnight, Strawberry Park allows you to unwind and rest your muscles after a day on the mountain. 

With an average temperature of 104℉, the hot pools are constructed with stunning stone masonry and nestled amongst gorgeous Aspens. This spot is beautiful any time of day or night and is the perfect way to end your trip to Steamboat Springs.
