More Than a Tourist Destination

Yes, this charming western town may be nicknamed Ski Town USA®, but Steamboat Springs is so much more than a simple tourist destination. It’s a real town, full of real people, living real lives.

Incredible natural scenery? Yes. Exciting recreation opportunities? Yes. A remarkable culinary scene? Yes, we’ve got all of that! But, it’s the community in the ‘Boat that keeps people coming back.

The locals even have a name for Steamboat’s unexplainable pull on visitors to return and again; they call it the Yampa Valley Curse. Here at The Astrid, we’ve certainly fallen captive to this ‘curse’, but we prefer to call it an incredible blessing!

The Astrid’s community partnerships are one of the ways we are making a positive local impact, ensuring that we are continually active in the flourishing of Steamboat Springs.

Giving Back to the Community

We exist to make repeat visits to Steamboat Springs hassle-free and enjoyable for our residents, who have chosen to make The Astrid their home-away-from home. That’s why our team is committed to putting community at the center of everything we do.

The local residents, wildlife, infrastructure, and history of Steamboat are deeply significant to us. We want to see Steamboat Springs, and everyone who lives here, flourish well into the future. As the town has extended generous western hospitality to us, we want to be good neighbors and do the same.

The Astrid is honored to support three incredible local organizations who are the heartbeat of the Steamboat community. Our partnerships with these remarkable groups have allowed us to lay down deep roots in Steamboat Springs, and fully immerse The Astrid in town traditions.

Let us introduce you to our dear community partners, so that you can join us in supporting the fantastic work they do for Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat STARS

The first of The Astrid’s community partners is Steamboat STARS. This remarkable non-profit organization offers year-round adaptive sports programs that promote independence, self-esteem, and a healthy lifestyle for youth and adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities, injured Veterans, and their families.

In 2007, a group of parents, ski instructors, and management from Steamboat Ski Corporation came together under one vision – to provide life-changing experiences for their participants. Today, STARS offers adaptive alpine skiing, nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, archery, cycling, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, mountain biking, paddle sports, water skiing, and more!

The staff and volunteers are passionate about sharing the activities they love with people who thought they would not have the chance to experience them. The STARS team might just be the most devoted and enthusiastic group of people you’ll ever meet! They dedicate their lives to making life-changing adventures happen for all of their participants.

“We don’t look at anything as impossible. We don’t have ‘no’ in our vocabulary! Because, if there’s a desire for somebody to get outside and recreate, then it’s our job to make it happen.”
– Ron Southworth, STARS Program Director.

In 2010, STARS became the exclusive operator of all winter adaptive lessons and programs for the Steamboat Ski area. So, the next time you see someone in a neon ‘guide’ vest gliding down the slopes, you’ll know it’s a member of the STARS team working to make outdoor adventures possible for everyone, no matter their physical or cognitive ability.

Steamboat STARS have endless opportunities for supporters to get involved. Whether it’s through donations, attending fundraising events, or volunteering, partnering with this remarkable organization is an amazing way to give back to the Steamboat Springs community.

Steamboat Tennis & Pickleball Center

Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Center is located at the foot of Mount Werner, less than a 10 minute drive from The Astrid, making it not only one of our community partners, but also one of our neighbors.

The center provides year-round opportunities for visitors to enjoy tennis and pickleball games in their outdoor and indoor courts. They are well-known in the area for their exceptional amenities, fantastic recreational and training programs, and strong relationships with the community.

Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball center is a real team effort – Court Sports 4 Life operate the center and are linked with the Steamboat Tennis Association. These organizations come together to support the youth of Routt County through mentoring projects, scholarships for junior players, funding school tennis teams, adaptive tennis, and act as the main advocate for youth tennis in the Yampa Valley –– the very reason we got involved.

Many of the youth initiatives are entirely run by enthusiastic volunteers, all of whom give their precious time, energy, and passion to enrich the lives of young people, no matter their ability or background. The center is often looking for new volunteers and is currently fundraising for construction projects so that they can better serve the Steamboat community.

We are proud to call the Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball center neighbors, and even prouder to support their amazing initiatives.

Old Town Hot Springs Recreation Center

You may have heard of The Astrid’s next community partner, Old Town Hot Springs Recreation Center. This remarkable non-profit provides recreation and education in aquatics and fitness to the whole Steamboat community.

The hot spring, named The Heart Spring, has been used as a site for fun and refreshment for over 100 years! The odorless spring water is naturally rich in lithium which promotes relaxation. Soaking in this spring is known to stimulate blood circulation and reduce muscle tightness, providing numerous benefits to visitors.

Old Town Hot Springs also boasts two exhilarating water slides, a state-of-the-art gym, a 37-foot climbing wall, an 8-lane lap pool, massage facilities, healthy dining options, and childcare. For Steamboat locals and guests, this historic, yet modern, center is a true family favorite.

As Routt County’s only public swimming facility without city or county tax support, donations are essential to keep the center running. A recent fundraising effort entitled ‘Capital Campaign: It’s in the Water’ will fund the essential reconstruction of the lap pool and kiddie splash area, which will give way to four new pools for swimming, programs, and recreation.

Not only does Old Town Springs Recreation Center provide a hub of health and relaxation to the community, it also gives back to a number of organizations and individuals throughout the year in order to fulfill its mission of providing health and wellness to everyone throughout the Yampa Valley.

As one of The Astrid’s community partners, we are so excited to see Old Town Springs Recreation Center continue to look after the historic natural spring, whilst renovating their facilities to better serve their visitors.
